pAVING THE WAY WITH SMOKEFREE MESSAGING

We’re trying something new with how we communicate smokefree and vapefree spaces and places across the city.  In the lead up to World Smokefree Day on 31 May you will see the new ‘proud to be smokefree’ pavement stickers being rolled out across suburban centres in Lower Hutt.

Smokefree and vapefree suburban centres are one part of Hutt City Council’s Smokefree Outdoor Public Places policy, one of the most comprehensive polices across Aotearoa New Zealand.  

Lower Hutt Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Community Committee Tui Lewis says that smokefree public places encourage liveable and family friendly communities.

“Smokefree spaces benefit the whole community by reducing exposure to harmful second-hand smoke, reducing the environmental impact of cigarette litter, and support people to lead healthier lives,” says Tui Lewis.

“The new pavement stickers are an innovative way to communicate this message. They will be implemented along with signage and continuous messages to ensure it is clear which places across the city are smokefree and vapefree, and ultimately create healthier spaces throughout the city.”

Hutt City Council’s extensive smokefree and vapefree policy is an example of how local government is contributing to the Government’s goal of a smokefree Aotearoa 2025 and is a step towards our vision of a city where everyone thrives.
