Community-Led Change: Signage Signals a Shift Toward Alcohol-Free Spaces in Wainuiomata.

Across the Hutt Valley, community-led efforts are helping create safer, more supportive spaces for whānau to connect, play, and thrive. A recent collaboration between local sports clubs, Healthy Families Hutt Valley (HFHV), and Hutt City Council has resulted in the development of new signage that encourages alcohol-free environments in and around community sports fields in Wainuiomata.

Driven by the values of manaakitanga and kōtahitanga, this initiative reflects the growing desire among local clubs to foster whānau-friendly spaces free from alcohol-related harm. Clubs such as Wainuiomata Rugby League and Wainuiomata Rugby have been strong champions for this kaupapa, promoting environments where tamariki can play, communities can gather, and everyone feels welcome and safe.

These new signs are more than just messaging—they represent community aspiration in action. Developed in partnership with Council team, the signage acknowledges and supports the proactive stance taken by local clubs. Their efforts are part of a wider conversation about alcohol harm prevention, and this collaboration highlights what’s possible when community values are upheld and supported through practical action.

Late last year, Hutt City Council invited public feedback through its policy review on local alcohol regulations. HFHV contributed a submission informed by community insights, calling for the expansion of alcohol-free zones across a range of public spaces—from parks and playgrounds to school drop-off zones and public transport areas. While policy change did not at that time follow, this kōrero has underscored the importance of continued engagement and advocacy for alcohol-free spaces, particularly where young people are involved.

The commitment shown by local clubs and the supportive response of Council signal a shared vision worth nurturing. This kind of partnership shows that change can begin with community voice, progress with collective action, and a shared belief in creating a healthier future for all.

Healthy Families Hutt Valley remains committed to supporting this movement and amplifying the voices of those leading the charge on the ground. When communities lead and systems respond, meaningful change becomes not only possible—but inevitable.
