Collectively reaching communities to advance hauora through sport

Healthy Families Hutt Valley recently had the opportunity to be a part of the Rugby League Pacific Series 2022. An event held at Hoon Hay Park in Ōtautahi which brings together over 81 teams, 1600+ participants and over 200 coaches and managers to shine a light on sport as a vehicle to bring the community together to share, embrace and celebrate culture, alongside actively promoting health and wellbeing.

A host of nations gathered and over the course of two days, 81 teams, 1600+ participants and over 200 coaches and managers came together to embrace community spirit, share kai, cultural traditions and a passion for sport.

Each year, the Rugby League Pacific Series captures communities from across Canterbury by providing an event that connects our people from all through the Pacific while championing health and wellness with a variety of stallholders providing health advice and support.

The celebration of culture and enabling connectedness was interweaved through all aspects of the event, beginning with the opening night where all participants and sports teams were welcomed and could take the opportunity to share their culture through prayer, music, haka, pe’e, siva tau, kailao.

The theme for the Pacific Series in 2022 is ‘I Belong’ which drives home the message that no matter who you are or where you are, there is a space and place that you feel you belong. Whether it’s with whānau, a team, church, school, there is always a place for you to connect with, that uplifts our wairua and has a positive effect on mental health and well-being.

The Series has a strong focus on mental wellbeing, the importance of Pasifika health while championing smokefree, vapefree and alcohol-free side-lines.

The event is a refreshing example of collectively reaching community through sport, while supporting people to live healthier and happier lives.
