A new community free bike sharing scheme, ‘Free Ride’ launched in Naenae at the end of October 2020. The first 10 brightly branded Free Ride bikes will be available from special bike racks outside the Naenae Clubhouse and the Naenae Library for anyone to take and borrow at no cost.

The idea behind the scheme is for riders to bring a helmet and borrow one of the bikes on offer to get around the city, returning the bike to the special bike rack when finished.

The ‘Free Ride’ launch provided an opportunity for people to check out the bikes, find out more about the scheme and connect with the wider community.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry said, “The Free Ride scheme is a fantastic way to provide opportunities for our people to be active, especially as we head in to summer. Not everyone can afford a bike, but the work led by Naenae Clubhouse and supported by Healthy Families Hutt Valley gives everyone the chance to use one.”

Lily Chalmers, Naenae Clubhouse Coordinator said “The launch event was very successful with many of our Clubhouse members attending and trying out the bikes as well as city councillors and Naenae locals. The people I have talked to about the scheme have been very supportive and can see that it will provide free access to bikes for our community members.”
